Suncheon Art Platform
The
Suncheon
Art
platform
is
set
to
become
a
significant
cultural
center
and
iconic
entryway
for
the
city
of
Suncheon.
The
site's
location
on
the
historical
axis
of
the
old
Yeonja-Ru,
which
functioned
as
the
South
Gate
of
the
Suncheon
Wall,
will
allow
the
Suncheon
Art
platform
to
integrate
urban
architecture
and
public
space,
preserving
both
cultural
and
historical
assets.
The
proposed
design
for
the
Suncheon
Art
platform
aims
to
reinterpret
history,
heritage,
and
locality,
with
two
emblematic
components
at
its
core:
the
"reed
forest"
and
the
"kan"
modular
system
used
in
traditional
Korean
house
construction.
The
Suncheon
Bay,
known
as
the
"reed
kingdom"
of
Korea,
and
its
wild
reed,
which
is
a
potential
bio-energy
source,
are
crucial
economic
resources
and
symbolic
images
of
Suncheon.
The
"kan"
system,
which
characterizes
Korean
architecture,
will
be
integrated into the proposed design, paying homage to the site's historical roots.
The
Suncheon
Art
platform's
space
program
will
be
arranged
like
the
reed
forest,
with
white
metal
tube
columns
and
a
2.4
meter
"kan"
modular
system.
The
thin
column
structures
will
not
only
support
the
main
exhibition
spaces
above
the
open
plaza
but
also
create
public
routes,
simulating
the
experience
of
walking
through
the
reed
forest.
The
building's
envelope
will
consist
of
perforated
metal
panels,
glass,
and
finished
concrete.
The
design
of
the
envelope
takes
inspiration
from
the
tranquil
and
natural
light
filtering
through
rice
paper
windows
in
traditional
Korean
buildings
at
night,
creating
a
serene
and peaceful ambiance.
The
Suncheon
Art
platform's
presence
will
attract
more
visitors
and
enhance
the
local
economy,
serving
as
a
symbolic
gateway
to
the
city
and
creating
a
vibrant
district
that
connects
the
underground
shopping
center,
the
culture
street,
and
the
fashion
street.
The
platform's
exhibition
spaces,
lecture
hall,
and
main
spaces
will
become
floating
jewel
boxes
at
night,
highlighting the beauty of the art and culture of the old city.
